Google is Releasing A Mobile-First Index
In simple terms, indexing is the process of adding web pages into Google search. Google crawls and indexes web pages throughout the internet. Their index is similar to an index in a library, which categorically lists information about all the books available.
Google’s mobile-first index means Google will create and rank its search listings based on the mobile version of content. Even for listings that are shown to desktop users. According to Google, more people are searching on a mobile device. However, their current ranking systems typically look at the desktop version of a page’s content to evaluate its relevance to the user. As you can probably imagine this can cause issues when the mobile page has less content than the desktop page. So, in order to make their results more useful, they have started rolling out their mobile first index.
Google’s mobile-first index likely not coming until 2018 at earliest
Fortunately, you still have time to prepare and future-proof your business. Check to see if your website is mobile friendly. Simply, input your website’s domain name in the field and Google will give you a mobile usability report.
If you have a responsive website then you are pretty much good to go. If not you could expect to see a reduction in online visibility and revenue within major search engines as your competition begins embracing a mobile-first strategy.
